Who We Are
Our shul is called Congregation Gesher Shalom (Bridge
of Peace) because of our proximity to the magnificent
George Washington Bridge, spanning the Hudson River between Fort Lee
and Manhattan. We are a Conservative egalitarian synagogue affiliated with the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism.
We took this name for ourselves shortly after the horrific events
of 9/11, because our community not only
suffered in that attack (Bruce Reynolds Drive, at the Bridge Plaza, is named in
memory of a Port Authority officer who was killed in the Towers, and our emergency
services served as crucial back-up for the fire, police and others agencies in the
City), but because of our desire for peace—and
commitment to pursuing it within our community,
Israel and the world.

Our synagogue also retains its original name,
The Jewish Community Center of Fort Lee, both in respect for our history and because of our continued commitment to the values of our founding members. Unassuming and low-profile from the street, the building houses an impressive facility, including a gym, beautiful sanctuary, a social hall, and multiple classrooms reflecting the ideal that a synagogue should serve all the needs of its community—spiritual, social, and physical.

We hope that you will allow Gesher Shalom to serve as your bridge to Judaism.
